Strain classifications relates to cannabis strains found in popular culture and dispensaries while cannabinoid content refers to quantifiable test results.

There are three main cannabis strains in the market: sativas, indicas and hybrids. Below is an overview of these classifications.

Some sativa strains have higher amount of a cannabis compound known as tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV). This compound is thought to be behind the stimulating effects of the sativas. The marijuana also have lower amount of myrcene, an aroma molecule that makes the plants' flowers smell like dried mangoes. This compound is known to reduce the sedation felt with indica marijuana strains.

  1. ii) Indicas Marijuana

Plants classified under this group have a number of physical characteristics that make them stand out from other plants. The characteristics include broad leaves and short, stocky plants.

In dispensaries, indicas are usually described as having a numbing sensation, physically relaxing and more sedative. Marijuana strains classified as indicas usually have a higher amount of myrcene.

iii)           Hybrid Marijuana

Most cannabis strains in the market are thought to be hybrids. However, keep in mind that there is no way of determining whether or not a strain is a pure hybrid. Generally, hybrid strains may have a higher amount of either sativa or indica. The strains may also have the two compounds in a balanced ratio.

Before selecting a hybrid marijuana strain, it is important to research well to know the kind of effects they have. You can know how much sedation you can get from a hybrid strain by checking its amount of myrcene. Hybrids are usually more potent than pure sativa or indica strains.
